Our history

London Metropolitan University has a rich history with strong educational roots dating back to 1848.

The University as it is today was created in 2002 with the merging  of London Guildhall University and the University of North London, the first merger between two universities in the UK. Its roots, however, lie firmly in the nineteenth century with the establishment of the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men in 1848.

In 1848 the then Bishop of London called upon the clergy to set up evening classes to improve the "moral, intellectual and spiritual condition of young men in the metropolis". The Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men was thus born and later became the City of London College and then the City of London Polytechnic. In 1992, it was awarded university status and adopted the name London Guildhall University.

Holloway campus

Over the past 100 years, our north London campus has developed into a modern, progressive centre with a strong reputation for widening access into education.

This campus began life in 1896 as the Northern Polytechnic Institute. By 1900, student numbers had doubled and later the Institute's evening degrees were recognised by the University of London. In 1992 the Polytechnic of North London won the right to the title of University and the ability to award its own degrees.

Our Strategic Plan identifies the quality and enhancement of our courses as a key priority.

Whether in our teaching, research, knowledge exchange or enterprise activity, London Metropolitan University is dedicated to upholding internationally recognised benchmarks of quality.

Relevant aims of our strategic plan include:

  • ensuring that all benchmarks of quality are met through uniform and timely quality assurance and enhancement processes
  • reviewing the course and research portfolio regularly to meet changing student expectations and research needs or opportunities
  • celebrating the educational and research emphasis of different schools, and also in different partner institutions, whilst ensuring common high standards of pedagogy, assessment, award and publication

Our quality assurance procedures are designed to ensure that our courses offer students the best possible learning experience.

About the University's admissions process

At London Metropolitan University we welcome students from all backgrounds and cultures.

We assess each application on an individual basis and will always consider your application for an alternative course if we're unable to make you an offer for your first choice of course.

When we receive an application we will assess it against the entry requirements for the course and make the appropriate decision. Individual entry requirements can be found on each course information page.

Entry requirements can include the following:

  • Academic entry requirements – such as UCAS points or A level grades
  • English language requirements – such as GCSE English grade C/4
  • Mathematics requirements – such as a GCSE Mathematics grade
  • Professional requirements – such as an acceptable professional reference
  • Statutory requirements – such as an acceptable Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate for courses that include mandatory placements working with children or vulnerable adults

Upon receipt of your application you are likely to receive one of the following four responses:

1. An offer to study

We may give you an offer for your chosen course or an alternative.

Offers can be unconditional (if you meet all requirements) or conditional (if you're yet to meet requirements, for example if you are waiting for your A level results).

2. An interview or portfolio request

We may ask you to attend an interview to meet the academic leader or to provide an academic portfolio to support your application.

3. A request for more information

If we don't have enough information to assess your application we may ask you to provide the additional information we need. This could include copies of qualifications (if you have completed your studies) or a CV.

4. A rejection

Unfortunately not all applicants are successful in gaining entry on to our courses. As mentioned we will always consider your application for an alternative course if an appropriate option is available. If we do reject your application we will provide feedback to explain the reason why in your decision letter.

Response times

We aim to process all applications within 10 working days. Please note, a final decision may take longer if we need to request further information or your course requires an interview or portfolio assessment. We encourage you to read our course entry requirements prior to submitting your application in order to make sure you have submitted all relevant information.

Complaints

Should you have a complaint regarding the admissions process you may read our complaints policy for guidance.
